Kaysville police and firefighters say the death of a man at a fire scene appears to have been a case of suicide, and possibly arson.

Police Lt. Paul Thompson said neighbors called 911 at 9:58 a.m. Tuesday to a report of smoke pouring from the garage of a home at 1056 E. Bedford Drive. Police officers arrived on the scene soon thereafter, and as they approached the front of the house heard a gunshot from the back yard.

Lying in the yard, unconscious from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, was 58-year-old Kasey Hardy, Thompson confirmed on Wednesday.

As firefighters battled the blaze that eventually gutted the home, paramedics rushed Hardy to the hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Arson investigators gathered evidence at the scene, but had not completed their investigation.

However, it was confirmed that the blaze began in the garage before spreading into the house itself, rendering the residence a total loss, Thompson said.

Hardy was believed to have lived alone at the home.
