A woman was killed and two people were hospitalized in serious condition after a rear-end collision in Cottonwood Heights late Monday night by an alleged drunken driver.

Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Ryan Shosted confirmed the crash occurred at 9:22 p.m. when an northbound SUV collided with a car that had slowed to make a turn at 6800 South from Wasatch Boulevard (3550 East).

Janet Etheredge, 59, who was sitting in the car's back seat, died at the scene. The driver and another passenger in the car were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The 30-year-old male driver of the SUV, Carter Tyler Davern Foulger, was arrested on suspicion of automobile homicide and driving while under in the influence of alcohol, according to jail records.

Foulger, who told police he had consumed 3-4 beers and 2-3 shots of liquor during the evening, said he swerved into the rear end of the other car while trying to take a picture of the sunset, according to a probable cause statement filed with the jail.
