A 31-year-old man was found dead inside a car in the parking lot of a local credit union appears to be the victim of a homicide, Cottonwood Heights police said Friday.

Construction workers found the body of Mauricio Martinez about 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the Mountain America Credit Union branch at 6440 S. 3000 East, Cottonwood Heights Sgt. Ryan Shosted said.

"We believe it's a homicide because the person passed away from gunshot injuries," Cottonwood Heights Shosted said. "We're not saying how many."

An initial investigation suggests that Martinez may have died elsewhere and been left in the lot. A medical examiner inspected his body at the scene and assisted police in determining the death was a homicide. An autopsy will also be conducted, Shosted said.

Police are looking for 32-year-old Alejandro Guardado as "a person of interest" in the case. They believe Guardado was driving the car where the victim was found at the time of the shooting. Anyone with information on Guardado's whereabouts is asked to call Cottonwood Heights police at 801-840-4000.

Anyone with information about Martinez's death is asked to contact the department at 801-944-7100.
