A fire early Saturday at the Westcliff Apartments in downtown Salt Lake City sent four people to the hospital with minor injuries and displaced about two dozen residents.

Two of the injured suffered smoke inhalation and another got a leg injury by jumping from a fire escape, according to tweets by the Salt Lake City Fire Department. A firefighter had a "minor traumatic injury" from being hit by a tool.

Crews were dispatched to the apartment building, 419 E. 200 South, at 1:46 a.m., the department said. Firefighters made four rescues, two from inside and two from the fire escape, and recovered three cats and a dog. All of the animals were unharmed.

The fire was out by 3:17 a.m. but crews were called back a short time later to extinguish a hot spot that flared up, the department said.

The blaze started in a unit on the third floor and has been determined to be accidental. The Red Cross was assisting displaced residents.
