A man suspected of aggravated assault was shot and wounded Friday night by an Ogden police officer.

The suspect, who was struck at least once, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, according to an Ogden Police Department news release.

The release says members of the Metro Gang Unit were watching for the man at a location in the 3100 block of Grant Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. when "officers encountered the suspect and one officer ultimately fired on the suspect."

The suspect allegedly had brandished a handgun and threatened a victim earlier in the day, the news release says. The officer who shot him is a 10-year veteran of the Ogden Police Department.

The department refused to release further details Saturday about the incident, including what led to the officer firing his weapon.

The Ogden Metro Gang Unit works with other agencies in Weber County to reduce gang activities, according to the department website.

The Weber County attorney's office was investigating the shooting Saturday.
