Davis County officials on Friday canceled an Amber Alert for two young children allegedly abducted by their noncustodial parents from a Clinton home after the family was found on the run in New Mexico.

Notice of the cancellation went out at 5:14 a.m. Friday, after police learned that the children and their parents, Christopher Montoya and Monica Martinez, had been located at a Gallup, N.M., motel. The girls were safe, and the parents in the custody of police, pending possible extradition to Utah.

A motel clerk reportedly had called police after recognizing Montoya from the multi-state Amber Alert's broadcast of his photo.

The parents allegedly showed up at the Clinton home Thursday under the influence of a controlled substance and took the children from the babysitter at about 3 p.m. without permission, Layton police say.

In addition, the parents might have been armed at the time, according to the Amber Alert.

The girls — 11-month-old Cynthia Montoya and 3-year-old Marae Montoya — were in the custody of the state. They were deemed endangered because of the parents' purported drug use, alleged mental health issues and violent tendencies, and the parents' transient status, officials said.
