A Unified Police officer and a female suspect suffered minor injuries late Thursday night when the woman — possibly under the influence of drugs, mentally ill, or both — collided with the officer's truck in Millcreek.

It began with a 911 call to the emergency entrance of St. Mark's Hospital, 1200 E. 3900 South, 10:07 p.m. Thursday, reporting the woman was acting erratically and revving her engine in the dropoff lane outside.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce (UHP is investigating the case, at UPD's request) said two UPD officers, contracting as security at the hospital, approached the car.

"That was when she made the comment that she was 'willing to die for my cause'," Royce said.

Just what her "cause" may have been remained a mystery on Friday, Royce said.

Now on alert, one officer pulled his handgun and the second readied a Taser, but the woman put the car into reverse and sped from the parking lot, heading westbound on 3900 South, without her lights on.

The officers issued an "Attempt to Locate" advisory, and moments later, a UPD truck, southbound on 900 East with its emergency lights activated, was T-boned by the woman's car at 3900 South.

Both the officer and the woman, who was removed from her car at gunpoint, were treated at the hospital for minor injuries. The officer was released, but Royce said the 24-year-old Taylorsville woman remained in custody at the hospital Friday.

"We're looking at impairment, mental issues or possibly both," Royce said.
