In a sign that summer is approaching, the Big Mountain Highway will open to traffic on Friday just after midnight.

Enough snow has melted that the Utah Department of Transportation says State Road 65 will open between milepost 3, just north of the Emigration Canyon Road turn-off, to milepost 14 near East Canyon Reservoir.

The highway is closed during winter months because of the high cost to clear snow there.

UDOT advised motorists that some winter storms may still occur at the highest elevations on the roadway well into the summer months, so they should be prepared for that when traveling the route.
