There were no injuries reported after firefighters battled a blaze Thursday afternoon at a Millcreek apartment complex.

Unified Fire Authority said the fire was at the Monaco Apartments, 4125 S. 465 East, where at least 24 units were affected.

Smoke from the blaze could initially be seen in downtown Salt Lake City.

UFA spokesman David Ulibarri said 80 firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the fire, which was reported at 2:39 p.m. The fire was extinguished at about 5:30 p.m.

Two buildings with 12 apartments each were affected, Ulibarri said.

Those buildings, as well as surrounding buildings, were evacuated, he said.

There were no injuries or people reported missing, Ulibarri said.

Fifty people were displaced, and the Red Cross was at the site to help them.

The fire was ignited by a cigarette on a third-floor balcony at one of the buildings and spread east to the adjacent building, according to UFA. The blaze has been ruled accidental.

Fire officials shut down 500 East from 3900 South to 4500 South. The road remained partially closed into the evening.

Ulibarri said crews will monitor the complex throughout the night.
