A 63-year-old man from Kaysville is in the hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while trying to secure a handgun in its holster.
The man had attended the Sandy Gun Show at the South Towne Expo Center. He was in the parking lot when the gun discharged, said Sgt. Dean Carriger of the Sandy Police Department.
The man had secured the .40-caliber pistol in his vehicle during the show and was in the process of putting it into a holster after the event when he fired a round into his right thigh about 4:15 p.m. Carriger said no one else was injured.
The man suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by the Sandy Fire Department before being transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Carriger said the man is expected to make a full recovery.
Carriger said the man was "very fortunate" and that the event served as a "good reminder to everybody that handles firearms to be familiar with their weapon and handle them with care."
