A Colorado man died this week after falling from a 200-foot cliff in Garfield County about 15 miles east of Escalante.

Andrew Mark Davis, 58, of Ridgeway, Colo., walked away from his campsite on the Spencer Flat Road in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument on Wednesday and did not return, according to Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins.

Davis' female companion called authorities the next morning, and a member of the sheriff's search and rescue crew found the man at the bottom of a high rock outcropping at about noon Thursday, Perkins said.

The woman had called Davis' brother the night before, but had been told not to worry, Perkins said.

Davis — who was wearing pajamas, house slippers and a jacket — appears to have slipped on rain-slick rocks, the sheriff said, possibly after having climbed to the top of the rock cliff to meditate.

Perkins said Davis was described as "a very spiritual" person, who was also an experienced hiker and rock climber.
