Eleven people have been displaced after a Salt Lake City house caught fire Tuesday.

The fire started in the attic of a home near 400 North Center Street (120 West) about 6:10 p.m. The people who live in the two-story structure — which is subdivided into seven units — escaped unhurt by the time firefighters arrived, said Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay.

"It gets to be tricky when there's an attic fire in an older building" because there are "a lot of hidden spaces" where the fire could be, Asay said.

It took firefighters about 50 minutes to find and extinguish the flames.

When the firefighters entered the home, a dog belonging to one of the homeowners ran outside. A police officer picked up the small black-and-white dog and reunited the pet with the owner, Asay said.

The Utah Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.

Investigators determined that the fire accidentally began because of an electrical malfunction in an air conditioning unit.

By about 10:30 p.m., the fire rekindled and firefighters returned to douse the flames. Crews remained well into Wednesday morning to prevent any new flareups.
