A southern Utah county commissioner acting as his own lawyer will get more time to appeal his conviction for leading an ATV protest ride through a protected canyon.
Phil Lyman asked an appeals court to push back the deadline in his case because it is set one day before he must report to jail to serve a 10-day sentence for illegal use of ATVs and conspiracy,
Court documents filed Tuesday show the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver agreed to a month-long delay until May 20.
Lyman has said he wants to prove he didn't trespass or encourage others to break the law during the May 2014 ride designed to protest what the riders called government overreach.
In addition to his 10-day jail sentence, he was ordered to pay $96,000 for repairs after the ride.
