Scaled-back search and recovery efforts for a Cedar City man, missing since Monday in the mountains of southern Utah's Iron County, could come to an end this weekend.

Iron County Sheriff's Lt. Del Schlosser said that while the search for 34-year-old Daniel Michael Brown continued throughout Friday, if no trace were found of the man, the search likely would soon be called off.

"The search will continue until Saturday for sure; we will re-evaluate it then," Brown said Friday. "If nothing new comes [by] Saturday night, the search will most likely be suspended."

Brown was clad only in a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers when he left his wife and four children to find help after their van became stuck Monday afternoon in the Kane Springs area. When he had not returned Tuesday morning, his wife called 911 for help.

She and the children were located by deputies and have since been sheltered in Cedar City.

On Thursday, the search effort officially became a recovery mission. Given Brown's light clothing, and overnight temperatures in the high desert area well below freezing, authorities said it was unlikely he could have survived.

Schlosser said deputies also are investigating the possibility that Brown may have been picked up by someone, though they had no evidence of that.

Brown recently had lost his job and had been living with his family in the van. They reportedly were looking for a campsite when the vehicle became stuck.

Brown is described as a 6-foot-3, 250-pound man with brown hair and green eyes.

Anyone who has information on Brown's whereabouts is asked to call Iron County dispatchers at 435-867-7550, their local law enforcement agency, or 911.
