The climber who died after a fall in Zion National Park last week has been identified as Eric Michael Klimt, of Portland, Ore.

The 32-year-old Klimt was climbing a Zion Canyon technical route known as Moonlight Buttress when he fell about 12:30 p.m. on March 9, park authorities said in a news release.

Klimt was top solo climbing the 1,200-foot route and had rope fixed on the upper three pitches when he fell, the park service said.

A group of climbers witnessed the fall and called for help.

Rangers found Klimt at the base of the route. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities believe Klimt fell between 800 and 1000 feet.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Washington County sheriff's office and the National Park Service.
