West Valley City • A man is in the hospital after a West Valley City officer reportedly shot him Tuesday night.

At about 6:30 p.m., West Valley City police responded to a call that said shots had been fired by a man near 3300 West and 4000 South, according to West Valley Police Chief Lee Russo.

"When the officers arrived on [the] scene, they observed a number of residents in the area that began to point in the direction of where a suspect had been seen with a firearm," Russo said.

Four officers went that way and encountered an armed man on the side of a house.

"Our speculation at this moment is that our officer did discharge a weapon and strike him," Russo said. The man was taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Russo could not say whether the man fired, how many shots were fired or where the man was hit.

No one else was injured.

The chief told reporters that at least two officers were wearing body cameras during the incident; only one officer was believed to have fired his weapon.

Officers found shell casings at the scene that support witness reports of shots being fired before the police arrived, according to the police department. Investigators have found no indication that the shots were fired at other people, Russo said.

Salt Lake City police will investigate the incident, per the Utah law requiring outside agencies to look into officer-involved shootings.
