Salt Lake County selects possible convention hotel developer

Salt Lake County has selected a Utah real estate developer as the potential builder of a large hotel near Salt Lake City's convention center.

Alyson Heyrend, a spokeswoman for Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, said Monday that a bid committee had selected DDRM Cos., of Sandy.

A county bid committee will negotiate terms of the 800 to 1,000 room hotel with DDRM. If they agree on a deal and the county endorses the project, DDRM can apply for at least $75 million in possible tax credits.

The county had been negotiating with Omni Hotels & Resorts but that deal fell through in August when the company sought a heftier incentive package from the government.

Utah officials say the long-awaited hotel would provide needed rooms for the state's convention business, including a lucrative biannual outdoor gear show.
