A Facebook posting showing a photo of what turned out to be an airsoft pistol, along with hints that the real looking firearm might be taken to two schools, has two male students in big trouble, Granite School District confirmed Thursday.

One Hunter High School student, a sophomore, and an eighth-grader from Kennedy Junior High School posted the photo, but district officials emphasized that, "No specific threat was made to either our schools or any specific students."

"The weapon was fake. It was an airsoft gun that looked like a real handgun. The students have indicated that it was a joke," the district stated.

District officials were informed of the posts shortly after they appeared around midnight Wednesday.

Both boys were questioned by West Valley City and Granite District police investigators early Thursday morning and then released to their parents' custody.

The airsoft pistol was confiscated, and the students were ordered not to attend classes on Thursday; they face district-level student disciplinary measures, including punishment up to suspension or expulsion.
