A 29-year-old man was fatally injured Friday morning when part of a structure he was working on fell on him at a West Jordan steel fabrication plant.

Public safety dispatchers say a 911 call came in from the SME Steel Contractors site, 5801 Wells Park Road (9600 South), at 6:37 a.m.

West Jordan police Officer Scott List said that Alphonzo David Grajeda, of Orem, was working underneath a 40-by-10-foot structural steel span, and he was in the process of cutting it when half of the structure suddenly broke loose, crushing his neck and head.

Grajeda was pronounced dead at Jordan Valley Regional Medical Center shortly after his arrival by ambulance.

The accident will be investigated by company and state and federal safety officials.
