A 90-year-old man looking for his dog was hit and killed by a sports-utility vehicle Friday night, Sandy police said.

About 7:45 p.m., the man was crossing 10600 South near 300 East, where there isn't a crosswalk, when the westbound SUV hit him, said Sandy Police Lt. Jon Arnold. Police have not yet released the man's name, but said that he lived in a nearby retirement home.

"It appears he was looking for his dog," Arnold said. The dog was later found and turned over to relatives.

The driver was cooperating with investigators, Arnold said.

Officers shut down 10600 South in both directions from 100 East to 400 East while they investigated the crash. The closure was expected to last until shortly before midnight, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
