A woman and a teenage girl were rescued after they became stranded on a small island, surrounded by thin ice, in Liberty Pond.

On Monday afternoon, the 13-year-old girl was on the ice at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park when she started to fall through, said Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Jasen Asay. About half of the pond was covered in what appeared to be "really thin ice," Asay said.

The girl's 11-year-old brother and 11-year-old male cousin tried to help her, but they too started falling into the water, Asay said.

A woman walking her dog nearby saw them on the ice and ventured out to help them. The boys returned to shore, while the woman and the girl became stranded on an island about 100 feet from the shoreline.

About 4:40 p.m. Monday, firefighters arrived to help them. A rescue team took a boat out to the island and brought the woman and girl back to shore.

Medical personnel attended to all four people at the park, warming them up. They all appear to be OK, Asay said.
