A Bountiful man who killed a motorcyclist in South Salt Lake while driving drunk has been sentenced to prison for up to five years.

Terrance Desmond Wheeler, 40, was turning his car left into the driveway of a convenience store near 600 West and 3900 South on Oct. 18, 2014, when he collided with a motorcycle driven by 39-year-old Justin Greaves, according to charges filed in 3rd District Court.

Blood tests showed Wheeler had a blood alcohol level of 0.13 percent, over the legal driving limit of 0.08. His blood also tested positive for THC metabolite, charges state.

Wheeler was charged with third-degree felony automobile homicide, class B misdemeanor driving with a measurable amount of metabolite in the body and class C misdemeanor failure to yield (left turn).

He pleaded guilty in December 2015 to the automobile homicide count and the other charges were dismissed.

At a Friday sentencing hearing, Judge Vernice Trease ordered Wheeler to serve zero to five years at the Utah State Prison for Greaves' death.

The judge ordered the sentence to run consecutive to a zero-to-five-year term for an unrelated 2012 burglary case.

In the burglary case, Wheeler had pleaded guilty, but his plea had been held in abeyance on condition he commit no new crimes. The auto homicide case violated the plea in abeyance agreement, court records show.
