One person is dead after an alleged carjacker ran into the person's car Monday on the Parrish Lane Interstate 15 overpass.

At about 4:30 p.m., Kaysville police responded to the report of a male and female carjacking a maroon Mazda 6, according to a Kaysville Police Department news release.

A few minutes later, a Unified police officer on his way to work drove up to a maroon Mazda 6, which was stopped on southbound Interstate 15 near Lund Lane in Centerville. A male and female were outside of the car, according to the release.

"The male told the Unified officer that he had run out of gas. The Unified Officer was not aware of the carjacking report, but felt that this was a suspicious circumstance," the release reads. When the officer contacted dispatchers, he was "informed that this was the suspect in the carjacking. Prior to this, it was reported that a female had jumped from this car on the freeway."

The officer tried to stop the male suspect, who allegedly climbed into a black Volkwagen, said Kaysville Police Lt. Kenton Pies. The lieutenant did not know whether the Volkswagen had stopped or was moving slowly in the flow of traffic — but its driver jumped out and escaped.

The suspect fled southbound on I-15, took the Parrish Lane exit, went through the intersection of the offramp and Parrish Lane and struck a gray eastbound car, according to police. The female driver of the gray car died; her identity has not yet been released.

The suspect was injured and went to the hospital.

No police vehicles were pursuing the suspect at the time of this crash, according to the release. The incident is under investigation.

The Centerville Police Department advised people through Twitter to avoid the Parrish Lane overpass, which will be shut down until about 9:30 p.m.
