Man who died inside burning Kanab building is son-in-law of Oregon standoff arrestee

The man who died Friday in a burning building in Kanab has been identified by family members as 37-year-old Logan S. Brown.

Brown is the son-in-law of Shawna Cox, one of the protesters arrested during the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, in Burns, Ore., according to Don Cox, who Shawna Cox's husband.

A faulty wood stove is believed to have sparked the blaze inside A-Action Sanitation Inc., at 510 N. 100 West, said Kanab Fire Chief Joseph Decker.

Decker said Monday that authorities were awaiting results of an autopsy by the state Medical Examiner's Office to confirm the dead man's identity.

Decker and the Kane County Recorder's Office both confirmed that the property was owned by Brown.

The building was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 10:30 p.m. Friday. It wasn't until the blaze was extinguished and firefighters went inside the smoky ruins that the human remains were found.

Decker said it appeared that the stove, which apparently had "issues" in the past, had ignited a wall and the fire quickly spread.

While the blaze initially appears to have been accidental, it continued to be investigated by Kanab's fire and police departments, as well as the Utah Fire Marshal's Office.

Shawna Cox, who has been released from jail, was expected to appear in an Oregon court on Wednesday.
