Salt Lake City police have identified a man who was fatally struck while crossing a rainy street last Friday night.

Sgt. Robin Heiden said John David Wenzlass, 56, of Salt Lake City, was not in a crosswalk as he attempted to cross 500 East from west to east at about 830 South. He was narrowly missed by a southbound vehicle, but as Wenzlass entered the northbound lanes, he was hit by an SUV about 6:15 p.m. Friday

The driver said he did not see the victim until it was too late. Police believe the heavy rainfall at the time hindered the driver's visibility.

No citations had been issued as of Monday, but the incident remained under investigation.
