A public viewing and funeral service for Unified Police Department Officer Doug Barney, who was killed in the line of duty, have been set.

The viewing will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake center at 2811 S. 6400 West in West Valley City.

The funeral service, which is expected to be attended by about 10,000 people, begins 11 a.m. Monday at the Maverik Center, 3200 Decker Lake Drive in West Valley City. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery.

Barney, 44, died Sunday after he was shot in a confrontation with Cory Lee Henderson, a fugitive parolee who was fleeing the scene of a traffic accident in Holladay. Barney was shot once in the head and died a short time later at the hospital.

Henderson wounded another UPD officer, Jon Richey, and died in an exchange of gunfire with police. Richey, 51, who was shot in both legs, was released from the hospital on Tuesday.

Barney, an 18-year veteran, was working overtime the day he died to help pay off medical bills incurred while fighting bladder cancer, the Unified Police Department said.

His obituary says Barney was a devoted husband and father who loved being with his family. His survivors include his wife and their three children.

The fallen officer, who had a boisterous personality, loved law enforcement and interacting with the community, according to his obituary.

"Doug was perfectly suited to law enforcement," the obituary says, "never able to sit perfectly still, always eager for something exciting and relating to other people in a down-to-earth, sincere way."
