Rain and snow are expected in much of the state this weekend, while avalanche danger will be elevated in the northern and central Utah mountains.

The Utah Avalanche Center has rated the risk for backcountry snowslides on Saturday as "considerable" on slopes in the Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake and Provo areas and the Skyline and Uintas districts. The risk in the Moab and Abajo mountains is "moderate."

Northern Utah has a chance of rain during the day Saturday, with rain and snow likely at night, according to the National Weather Service.

Highs along the Wasatch Front are expected to range from the mid-30s to mid-40s and lows should dip to the low 20s to 30.

Significant snow accumulation is expected in the mountains and mountain valleys in the western two-thirds of the state Saturday night.

On Sunday, snow is likely in the morning in most Wasatch Front locations, followed by a chance of snow showers in the afternoon. Highs of 30 to 40 and lows in the 20s down to near 10 are predicted for Sunday in northern Utah.

The Sunday snow showers over the mountains and western valleys are expected to mostly end by Monday morning but could linger into Tuesday in some areas, the weather service says.

St. George should see highs in the mid 50 and lows in the upper 30s on Saturday and a range from the lower 50s to the low 30s on Sunday. There is a 50 percent chance of rain Saturday night.
