Arson investigators on Friday were combing through the ashes of a suspicious fire that destroyed an abandoned home in Sandy.

Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Chris Dawson said the blaze, reported just after midnight, had engulfed the one-story house in smoke and flames when crews arrived at the scene, about 150 West and 9400 South, near the Rio Tinto soccer stadium.

"From signs at the scene, it looked like someone just went up to the house, intentionally set it on fire, and walked away," Dawson said.

It took about an hour to bring the fire under control, and firefighters remained on the scene until shortly after dawn to keep watch on embers and douse hot spots and flareups.

No one was believed to have been squatting in the house, and no injuries were reported.
