Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is declaring January radon action month.
Herbert said in a news release Monday that he wants to bring attention to the state's unique radon gas risk. He says that Utah has the highest rate of homes with radon gas exposure. The governor's office says one in every three homes have radon gas exposure.
The invisible gas becomes a bigger problem during the winter since houses are sealed to protect against the cold.
Despite the high risk, few families are paying the $8 to test their home for exposure to the naturally occurring gas. Gov. Herbert hopes more families spend the money to do the test.
