Members of the Unified Fire Authority's water rescue team saved a dog from an icy pond in Herriman on Monday afternoon.

The dog's owner was walking the dog at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, when the dog spotted some ducks on the man-made pond, located at 14191 S. Spring Canyon Drive, and chased them, said UFA Battalion Chief Brian Anderton.

Once in the pond, the dog, a large hunting breed, was unable to get itself out, Anderton said.

Luckily, UFA's specialized ice and water rescue team is stationed in Herriman.

The rescue team had the dog out of the pond within 15 minutes of getting the call from the dog's owner, Anderton said.

He cautioned pet owners, and people in general, to be careful around bodies of water this time of year.

"A person certainly wouldn't last 15 minutes in that water," Anderton said.
