A snowshoer was rescued Sunday evening after getting lost in the mountains east of Layton.

The 24-year-old man began his hike into Farmington Canyon from Fernwood Park about 6 a.m., said Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. DeeAnn Servey. But during the hike, he lost one of his snowshoes and "it was getting pretty treacherous to travel," the sergeant added.

The man called his father, but when the call ended, the father became nervous and called dispatch about 4 p.m., Servey said.

A search and rescue team looked for the man with the aid of a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, which spotted him by about 5:35 p.m. By 6 p.m., the man was rescued from the canyon and on his way to be checked out by medical personnel, Servey said.

She noted that the man, who had blankets and food with him, was well prepared for the winter hike.
