A 23-year-old Utah State University student was killed Wednesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash in Sardine Canyon near Mantua that closed US 89/91 in both directions for nearly three hours.

Joshua T. Diamond, of West Jordan, was driving up the canyon at about 8:30 a.m. when he lost control on the snowpacked, icy road and the SUV he was driving slid into oncoming traffic, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.

Diamond's white SUV was hit head-on by a semi-trailer rig and then was struck broadside by a black SUV.

Diamond was dead at the scene.

Minor injuries were suffered by the 47-year-old semi driver from Logan, as well as the occupants of the black SUV, a 39-year-old Sandy woman and her 15-year-old male passenger.

Royce listed "speed too fast for conditions" as the cause of the crash.
