A pickup truck's tire separated from the vehicle, causing a crash that killed a former mayor of Preston, Idaho on Interstate 84 in Box Elder County.

Jay B. Heusser, 58, of Preston, was driving west about 29 miles from the Idaho border with two large containers of liquid feed for cattle about 8 a.m. Tuesday when the tire detached, Utah Highway Patrol troopers wrote in a media statement.

The pickup crossed the median and both oncoming lanes before it traveled off the south side of the road, troopers wrote. The truck rolled several times, causing Heusser to slip out of his fastened seatbelt and throwing him from the truck, troopers said.

Heusser died at the scene.

Heusser's two terms as mayor stretched from the late '90s to the early 2000s, according to The Associated Press.
