The two people who were killed when a small plane crashed Thursday near Hurricane have been identified as Shawn Ackerman, 56, and Bonnie Ackerman, 49.

The two, who lived in Hurricane, were in a single-engine, two-passenger plane that crashed at about 1:30 p.m. in a remote area between Sullivan Knoll and Flora Tech Road.

The aircraft reportedly was seen traveling "very low" before the crash.

The Ackermans' family issued a statement Saturday asking for donations to Best Friends Animal Society (http://www.bestfriends.org/donate) in Kanab in lieu of flowers.

"Thank you for respecting the family's privacy in this time of mourning," the statement said.

The accident is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
