A storm is expected to move into Utah Friday afternoon, bringing a mix of rain and snow that should persist overnight.

It's the first in series of weak weather systems expected to move across the state through the weekend and into the first part of next week, the National Weather Service said.

Skies will be mostly cloudy Friday with highs in the low to mid 40s, and a 20 percent chance of rain Friday afternoon that may turn to snow after midnight.

The chance of precipitation increases to 30 percent on Saturday.

Forecasters say valley inversions will remain in place across parts of northern and eastern Utah, although strong southerly winds rising from the ground will erode them along the area benches.

Temperature variations between the valley floor and the benches may also differ by 10 to 20 degrees, forecasters say.
