An early morning SWAT standoff in Spanish Fork was resolved peacefully after police found a man — who was allegedly holding his girlfriend and their children hostage — passed out in a bedroom.

Spanish Fork police were called to the home Wednesday, near 400 North and 900 East, after the woman's 12-year-old son went to a neighbor's house just after 11 p.m. and told her that his mother's boyfriend was threatening his mother with a gun while two other children were in the apartment. The neighbor alerted police, according to Spanish Fork police.

"It was reported the suspect threatened to kill the female victim and the children in the residence," authorities said in a news release. "He was reported to have a handgun in his possession while he was making the threats."

By the time officers arrived, the mother had fled the residence and told police that two children, ages 2 and 12, were still inside with the 52-year-old man.

Nearby apartments were evacuated, according to police, as officers tried to speak with the man. The Utah County Metro SWAT team was then called to the scene, along with a hostage negotiator.

The SWAT officers broke through the front and back doors of the apartment just before 2 a.m. and found the suspect passed out in a bedroom where the 2-year-old was also located. The second 12-year-old was also in the apartment.

The "heavily intoxicated" man was arrested, according to police, and booked into the Utah County Jail at about 4 a.m. on suspicion of domestic violence, disorderly conduct and threat of violence with a domestic-violence enhancement.

Lt. Matt Johnson said Thursday that police searched the residence and found three loaded 40-caliber handgun magazines, but did not find a handgun.
