The Salt Lake City police are investigating a credit union robbery, and an attempted bank robbery, both of which occurred Tuesday evening.

About 5 p.m. Tuesday, the man passed a note to a teller, demanding money, at the Mountain America Credit Union at 1225 S. Redwood Road (1700 West), according to the Salt Lake City police. The teller complied and the suspect left on foot.

Police described him as a black man between the ages of 25 and 35, who is 6 feet tall with a slim build. In a surveillance photo provided by police, he was wearing a baseball cap and a checkered shirt.

Then at 5:35 p.m., a man of similar description tried to rob a Wells Fargo at 778 S. Main St.

"The suspect presented a note to the teller stating he had a gun and to give him the money," though no gun was seen, a police watch log reads. But "communications began to break down when the teller, unsure which denominations to give, asked the suspect what he wanted."

After some confusion, the teller told the suspect to write what he wanted on a note. He did, but the request was "still unclear" to the teller, Detective Greg Wilking said.

The suspect left without any cash.

The suspect was described as a black man in his 20s, with a skinny build. He was wearing a red long-sleeved shirt with a white logo on the front, blue jeans, black/white tennis shoes and a black bandanna on his head.

Although the suspect descriptions in both episodes are similar, police said they are not sure both robberies were committed by the same man.

Police are asking anyone who may know who the suspect from the credit union robbery is, or where he is, to call them at 801-799-3000. People can also text anonymous tips to 274637, beginning the text with TIPSLCPD, followed by any relevant information, according to a police news release. The case number, for reference, is 15-211662.
