A teenager has died after a freeway crash in Murray.

The Utah Highway Patrol identified the teen as Matthew Pruneda, 17, of Lehi, on Friday night.

On Sunday morning, Pruneda was a passenger in a sedan traveling westbound on Interstate 215. The driver, a woman in her early 20s, reportedly drifted off the freeway onto the dirt shoulder, according to a UHP news release.

When the driver tried to return to the road, the car yawed and struck a support pole for a sign near 1400 West, the UHP reported.

The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Pruneda was taken to the hospital in "extremely critical condition," and on Tuesday, troopers learned that he had died.

Troopers are "investigating impairment as a possible cause of the crash," the UHP release adds.
