The Utah Ethical Leadership Awards recognize leadership in Utah businesses, non-profit organizations and government entities that embody best practices in ethical behaviors. The awards are a joint effort between the Community Foundation of Utah, the Daniels Fund and the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at the Eccles School.

Housing Authority of Salt Lake City won the Utah Ethical Leadership Award in government category. The organization provides and promotes affordable housing for low-income persons living in Salt Lake City through at $34 million annual budget from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"I feel very honored for our agency to receive this award being stewards of taxpayer dollars. It requires integrity and transparency to gain the public's trust and the people we work with," said Terry Feveryear, executive director, Housing Authority of Salt Lake City.

Nominees for the awards were judged based on eight criteria:

1. Integrity – Act with honesty in all situations

2. Trust – Build trust in all stakeholder relationships

3. Accountability – Accept responsibility for all decisions

4. Transparency – Maintain open and truthful communications

5. Fairness – Engage in fair competition and create equitable and just relationships

6. Respect – Honor the rights, freedoms, views and property of others

7. Rule of Law – Comply with the spirit and intent of laws and regulations

8. Viability – Create long-term value for all relevant stakeholders

Health Catalyst provides data warehousing and analytics technology that helps to improve quality, add efficiency and lower costs for health systems supporting more than 50 million Americans. The company won the Utah Ethical Leadership Award in the business category.

"Ethics and a sense of mission are foundational elements that we deeply value as a management team and we have built those elements into the culture of the company," said Jeff Selander, Chief People Officer of Health Catalyst. "We're convinced that, as team members follow these operating principles, they make better long-term decisions for our clients, for patients, and for our company."

The awards are designed to recognize organizations that embody the spirit of ethical leadership exhibited by businessman Bill Daniels, who believed deeply in ethics and integrity, and in the importance of absolute ethical principles.

"It's important for our community to pay tribute to companies and organizations that exemplify ethical behavior and integrity in their operations. Ethics is taught in the classroom here at the David Eccles School of Business – it's part of every discipline and course curriculum," said Dr. Abe Bakhsheshy, director and professor of the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at the Eccles School.

Two finalists and one winner are named in each of the three categories:

Business

Winner: Health Catalyst

Finalists: XMission, Mark Miller Subaru

Non-Profits

Winner: Neighborhood House

Finalists: Salt Lake Community Action Program, Project Read

Government

Winner: Housing Authority of Salt Lake City

Finalists: Salt Lake County, Utah Attorney General's Office
