An Iron County man convicted of shooting and wounding a motorcyclist in Cedar City will serve four years to life in prison.

James Alan Reynolds, 57, of Enoch, was sentenced Tuesday for attempted murder, a first-degree felony. He had pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the charge in June, according to court documents.

Fifth District Judge Keith Barnes ordered that Reynolds be taken to the Utah State Hospital until he is "medically stabilized," before his eventual transfer to Utah State Prison.

Cedar City police previously said that Reynolds was driving his motorcycle when an officer tried to pull him over for a moving violation. But Reynolds allegedly took off in the opposite direction, according to officials.

The officer pursued him north on Main Street, when police said Reynolds drew a gun and shot a 21-year-old man, who was also riding a motorcycle in the same direction. The victim went off the road and crashed.

The pursuit ended after Reynolds tried to pass through a congested intersection at Center and Main streets against a red light and his motorcycle colliding with a westbound vehicle.

The shooting victim was taken to the Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition.
