Bountiful police are investigating a deceased man's phone for potential messages between him and the man charged with his death.

Heneli (Henry) Kalainisi Kaufusi, 35, was charged last month in 2nd District Court with one count of first-degree felony murder for the Oct. 14 death of 37-year-old Sione Mangisi.

Kaufusi "struck, kicked and stomped on the victim multiple times, which resulted in the victim's death," according to charging documents. Mangisi was the ex-husband of Kaufusi's girlfriend.

Mangisi's phone, which police found in his vehicle, "may contain evidence of the communication Sione and Heneli had leading up to the confrontation," according to newly released search warrants.

Specifically, an investigator monitoring Kaufusi's phone calls from jail claims Kaufusi made "references there may be evidence or threats via email between he and the victim," according to one search warrant.

Another search warrant mentions that Mangisi and Kaufusi "exchanged multiple text messages regarding child custody and visitation prior to the altercation," which may "contain communication between the victim and suspect, which led to the altercation."

The attack occurred in front of a Bountiful home, located in the 3500 block of Lexington Drive, where Mangisi's ex-wife and children live, and where Kaufusi also lives, according to police.

Police believe Mangisi came to the home to see his children, but have said they do not know what sparked the confrontation.

Officers responded to a 911 call about two men fighting outside the home. The caller reported that Kaufusi was standing over the other and that he was allegedly "swinging at" and "stomping" the victim, according to a jail document.

Kaufusi also allegedly threw Mangisi into the street, where he got back on his feet, the jail document adds.

When an officer arrived, he saw Kaufusi with bloody hands and clothing, a ripped tank top and a cut under one of his eyes. Both men were treated at the scene, but Mangisi died before reaching a hospital.

Kaufusi was booked into the Davis County jail. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for Monday.
