Nevada wildlife officials are trying to find out who poached a bull elk and left it to rot in southern Nevada near the Utah border.

The elk was found dead near Pearson Ranch in Lincoln County, Nev., where a landowner's trail camera caught an image of two poachers riding an ATV in the morning of Aug. 29. They apparently were hunting with a spotlight, wildlife officers said.

"In addition to shooting the animal at night, those involved left most of the meat to waste, compounding this senseless crime," investigators wrote in a statement by the Nevada Department of wildlife.
