A 77-year-old Ferron man died after a tire on his truck failed while he was hauling a boat, causing him to crash Wednesday in central Utah .

Jay Larsen was hauling a boat attached to his Ford Ranger about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 70 near Salina when the truck's left rear tire failed, Utah Highway Patrol troopers reported.

"It appears that the driver attempted to slow for the tire failure, but the boat pushed the truck sideways and off the road to the right," troopers wrote in a statement Wednesday.

The truck rolled off the road, troopers said.

Larsen, who was not wearing a safety belt, was thrown from the truck and died at the scene.

A female passenger was wearing a safety belt and remained in the truck, but was critically injured and flown to a hospital.
