A man who jumped from the underside of a West Valley City overpass onto the top of a moving semi-truck on Wednesday afternoon was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Police were called at about 1 p.m. when someone spotted the man climbing into the rafters beneath the SR 201 overpass that crosses 3200 West, said West Valley City Police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

An officer arrived and tried to talk the man into coming down, but he would not, Vainuku said. While the officer was still talking to him, the man jumped from the overpass onto a passing semi, which the officer immediately pulled over.

"The man was not responsive, so we have medical evaluating [him]," Vainuku said.

An initial medical evaluation took place on top of the semi rig, according to a photo tweeted by police. The man was later taken to a hospital, though Vainuku did not know what his condition was.

A police department news release says the man was under the influence of drugs and was cited for public intoxication. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for prior warrants, the release states.

"As to whether he fell or jumped, [it] appeared to witnesses that he jumped onto [the] semi," police tweeted.
