The Utah Avalanche Center has a new director.

Bozeman, Montana avalanche forecaster Mark Staples will replace Bruce Tremper, who has retired after 29 years.

In anticipation of the year's first snowfall, the center is hosting a workshop on the avalanche safety and backcountry skills as well as techniques and technology on Saturday.

The center is also offer a new, free one-hour avalanche awareness program for people going into the mountains over the winter.

They will also increase avalanche forecasts from one to two per week on the Skyline Plateau near Mt. Pleasant and offer additional forecasts for central Utah.
