Two people were taken into custody Tuesday in connection with shots fired near Edison Elementary School in Salt Lake City.

The first one arrested was a man in his mid-30s who tried to get into the school when police arrived to investigate the report of gunfire, according to Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking.

The suspect was not able to get inside because the school, at 466 S. Cheyenne St. (about 1700 West), had gone into lockdown after someone on the playground heard the shots at about 10:40 a.m., Wilking said.

He said the shots came from nearby Wright Circle and, when the suspect saw police officers, he took off on a bicycle and rode to the school.

A second person, a 20-year-old man, was arrested later. He was wanted on a felony aggravated assault charge, among others.

No gunshot victims have been found and there apparently were no injuries, Wilking said.

He said the first suspect likely will face drug and illegal gun possession charges, among others.
