A Unified Police Department officer suspected of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl has been arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of five counts of rape.

The officer, Regan Anson, 25, was taken into custody Wednesday and is being held in a Davis County jail on $150,000 bail, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department, which is investigating the case.

Anson — who has been with Unified Police for seven months and is a probationary employee — has been placed on administrative leave while criminal and internal investigations continue.

UPD investigators discovered evidence of the relationship during an unrelated investigation, and the case was immediately turned over to Salt Lake City police, according to a news release. The release says Anson was arrested within 48 hours of the discovery of the evidence.

"We hold our officers to a high standard," the UPD release says. "The public expects us to police our own officers, and we take that duty very seriously. We are shocked and dismayed by this incident and will continue to fully cooperate with this investigation."

Salt Lake City police Detective Cody Lougy said the alleged victim said she had sex with Anson on at least five occasions. The encounters were crimes because there is a more than seven-year difference in the teen's and officer's ages and because Anson holds a position of trust, Lougy said.

Lougy added that Anson met the girl while he was on duty and in uniform and knew how old she was. The incidents occurred when the officer was off duty, he said.
