A car ran a stop light Saturday in Orem and killed a woman on a bicycle and injured her husband, a police spokesman said.

Stacy Bown, 51, died about 9 p.m., said Orem police Lt. Craig Martinez. Kevin Bown, 55, remained in critical condition Saturday night but was improving, Martinez said.

About 3 p.m., the Bowns were on bicycles waiting for a red light on 800 East at University Parkway, a few blocks from their home. When the light turned green, they began pedaling south on the street.

A Honda Civic traveling east drove through a red light and struck the Bowns, Martinez said. Stacy Bown took the brunt of the impact, the lieutenant said, while her husband was hit by the car's front corner.

Witnesses reported the Honda did not brake, Martinez said. Martinez said detectives had interviewed the driver but weren't sure why he didn't stop. Martinez said the accident remains under investigation, but the motorist remained free Saturday night.

"There's going to be some [criminal] charges handed down," Martinez said. "As far as what, we just don't know right now."
