A 21-year-old woman was killed instantly when her car drifted off northbound Interstate 215 early Friday and collided with the concrete supports of an overpass at 3100 South in West Valley City.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said that while road surfaces were wet from overnight rainfall, it appeared the driver, identified as Kimberly Buchanan, of Bountiful, fell asleep at the wheel just prior to the 3:30 a.m. accident.

Royce said Buchanan was not wearing a seat belt, but there was no evidence excessive speed, drugs or alcohol were involved.

The crash closed the right two lanes of northbound I-215 at the scene for about three hours.
