Charges were filed Thursday against a 34-year-old Sunset man accused of stabbing a man in the chest last month.

Michael Ennis was charged in 2nd District Court with first-degree felony murder, a crime that is punishable by up to life in prison.

Ennis — who is accused of stabbing 31-year-old Tyler Eastabrook outside a Sunset apartment building — is expected to make his first appearance in court on Monday.

On Sept. 15, Ennis went to the apartment building where the mother of his child lived "because he wanted to find out why she would not talk with him," according to a probable cause statement filed in court.

Eastabrook — who also fathered a child with the woman, according to police — came to the apartment minutes later. The woman asked Ennis to leave, according to court records, and he grabbed a knife from a box sitting by the door on his way out.

"The victim followed [Ennis] out of the apartment and some sort of altercation occurred," the probable cause statement states. "During the altercation, the defendant stabbed the victim one time in the chest."

Eastabrook was dead before police and paramedics arrived. Ennis, witnesses said, had fled the apartment on foot.

About 30 minutes later, officers found Ennis in a field about half a block away. He surrendered without a struggle.

Police have said that Ennis told investigators that he used the knife to defend himself after Eastabrook punched him.
